On July 7, 2016, Clayton Harris III, newly appointed Executive Director of the Illinois International Port District, addressed CAIC members at a luncheon held at Harborside International Golf Center. More than 100 attendees listened as Mr. Harris talked about the future of the Port, the problems, issues and challenges of making the Port more competitive, and the need to develop a vision for that future. He emphasized that a crucial first step in this process is to identify the interested parties, required to effectively work through a four phase process of agenda setting, option formulation, implementation and evaluation. The Port owns approximately 1,500 acres of land near Lake Calumet and Lake Michigan, including Harborside International Golf Center, which an outside company manages. A range of industrial & warehousing firms lease space from the District.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Harris was Midwest Director of Government Affairs for the environmental & engineering firm CH2M Hill, and also had stints as Chief of Staff at the Illinois DOT and the Chicago DOT, among other government jobs. He has a bachelor’s degree in aerospace technology from Middle Tennessee University and a law degree from the Howard University School of Law.
